Yes — Birdpool is completely free for pools with 4 or fewer entries. For larger pools (5+ entries), there is a one-time $20 fee per pool. Participants never pay anything to join.
No. Participants just click your join link, enter their name, pick their golfers, and submit. No account, no password, no friction. Only the pool organizer needs an account.
The organizer divides the field into tiers based on world ranking (e.g. Tier 1: top 10, Tier 2: ranked 11-25, etc.). Each participant picks one golfer per tier. This levels the playing field — you cannot just pick all the favorites.
By default, scoring is based on combined score to par. The entry with the lowest combined score at the end of the tournament wins. Golfers who miss the cut keep what they shot through Round 2 plus a configurable penalty for each round they didn't play (default +8 per missed round). You can also score by total strokes, use best-of scoring, and tune the penalty.
When joining, participants guess the winner's final score to par (e.g. -18). If two entries tie at the end, the participant whose guess was closest to the actual winning score wins the tiebreaker.
